What are some Common Feline Illnesses?

Cats can be a special part of any family. If you have a cat in your home, you need to be aware of the most common feline illnesses. You should look for signs of these illnesses and take your cat to the vet if there’s a sign of any trouble.
Heartworm is a problem for many cats and it can lead to sudden death. It’s more of a problem for outdoor cats than indoor cats. Heartworm presents itself in asthma, digestive problems and pneumonia. The best treatment for heartworm is prevention through pills and other treatments available for your vet.
Upper respiratory infections are as common in cats as they are in humans. URIs present themselves in cats in much the same way that they present themselves in humans. You may notice that your cat sneezes, coughs or has a runny nose. Cats can catch URIs from other cats and from humans. Vaccines can cut down on URIs, but if you notice your cat has cold-like symptoms you should take him or her into the vet.
Ear mites can affect cats that are around infected animals. They are too small to see with the human eye, but you can tell they are there if your cat is shaking its head vigorously. You may also see a thick black crust on your cat’s ears. Your vet can give you ear drops to eliminate the ear mites.
Cats, like other animals, can mask illness so be sure to watch for a drop in their appetite and energy level. See your vet if you suspect a problem.
