Pros and Cons of Pet Health Insurance for Multiple Cats
November 18, 2009 by Shannon
Are you worried about the vet bills for your cats? If you have more than one cat, it can easily get very expensive, very quickly, especially if one or more of your cats has a health issue. For cat breeders, this can rapidly get out of hand, particularly if kittens are born with health issues or if a good breeder ends up in trouble.
Before you rush off to purchase the first cat health insurance for your cat that you can find, let’s take a look at the good and the bad of purchasing pet insurance for a multi-cat household.
The Cons of Multiple Cat Health Insurance
Older cats may use up the available treatments, leaving other, younger cats, more vulnerable. You will need to make sure that any insurance policy offers enough coverage for all your cats, not just the sickly ones.
You are still responsible around 50% or more of the vet costs, depending on the deductible. This can add up rapidly if you have several cats.
If you purchase each policy separately, it can really add up fast, not to mention it’s a lot of paperwork. Instead, look for policies that will cover all of your felines.
You may not be able to choose your vet. Make sure you check this before deciding which insurance company to use. If they don’t allow you to make your own selection, you might want to look elsewhere.
Pre-existing medical conditions aren’t included in most cases. So, if your cat has cancer or something else that requires treatment, getting cat health insurance won’t help much in reducing costs.
You may end up paying for health insurance and not using it if none of your cats get sick. While healthy felines are a very good thing, this also means you are out of your money if you’ve been paying out for health insurance on all of them.
The Pros of Multiple Cat Health Insurance
Insurance greatly reduces out of pocket costs when you need emergency medical aid for one of your cats. You can often put all your cats on one insurance policy, which saves money from doing each one individually, as well.
Mundane vet visits may be covered. Cat breeders tend to need a lot of vet services. When kittens need their shots and deworming, it can really add up quickly. However, if you get the right pet health insurance, these visits would be covered, drastically reducing the fees.
With multiple cats, you are far more likely to need cat health insurance. The chances of one of the cats requiring medical assistance goes up with the more cats you have and the older they are, so having a policy in place can save you a lot of money.
As you can see, it’s a difficult decision. If you have unlimited money and are able to choose the right insurance policy, then it makes sense to go with a policy. However, most people just don’t have that kind of option. It may be more difficult to decide. If your cats tend toward hereditary and pre-existing conditions, cat health insurance might not do you any good at all.
Take the time to think it over carefully and work out the current vet costs as well as what the insurance would cost you. Don’t forget to include the deductibles, or the amount you would be responsible for before the pet insurance kicks in. This can have a large bearing on whether or not it’s worth it. However, for purebred cat breeders, insurance is often a good idea, because these owners are handling so many felines at once and in potentially risky situations, such as birthing. Take your time and make your decision carefully.
